PACK MEETING DEN ASSIGNMENTS
Welcome Pack members and their guests - and keep those who are not part of our organization from entering the building.
Provide an object or jar of objects that the scouts will need to make an estimated guess about. You are also required to provide the guessing slips and a small supply of pens/pencils. The winner is announced at the end of the awards ceremony and recieves a small award which is usually the item(s) that were being guessed at. The item(s) to be guessed at should follow the monthly theme if possible or the holiday for the given month. Examples of an item for February might be to guess all the purple candy hearts in a jar full of many different colored candy hearts! Don't make it too easy - make it fun! And by all means - know the correct answer. You are also responsible for collecting the guess slips and determining the winner. Multiple winners will split the award if possible.
Set up 3 tables. One out front between the flags, & two to the sides for showing den activities, "Guesstimation Station", meeting flyers, and other handouts. Just as important is the "tear down" piece after the meeting is over.
The assigned den or dens are asked to bring in your creations or pictures of a previous activity. It does NOT have to be from the most recent den meeting - any meeting which the den leader feels is good for display is acceptable. There will be a large foldout board that can be used for pictures or drawings.
Presenting and Retiring the Colors
Bring in the flags at the beginning, and end of the meeting. The Cubmaster or Den Leader will give the commands. Here are the step-by-step instructions. It is recommended that the assigned den(s) arrive 10-15 minutes early to step through the process.
Opening and Closing Ceremonies, Skits, and Songs
This can be as simple as needed. The desire is to give each boy a chance to speak in public and grow in confidence. These presentations are generally related to the theme of the month, but do not have to be. They should last no more than 10 minutes, and are usually only about 5 minutes. See the Cub Talents page for ideas, or read the Program Helps book for the current month which will list one or more skits or songs appropriate for the monthly theme. If a song is chosen - the title and words are to be provided to the Cubmaster one week prior to the Pack meeting so that he can include them in the meeting flyer. Songs that will be performed at the beginning of the meeting should be excitement builders, while songs at the end of the meeting should be quiet and help the crowd calm down. The assigned den will decide whether they wish to perform their song/skit at the beginning or end of the meeting - but they must coordinate this with the Cubmaster. It is preferred that songs allow for the entire Pack and parents to join in at some point.
Another chance for the boys to speak in public and gain confidence. The words for the prayer can be taken from the Program Helps or made up by the den or den leader. The Program Helps prayers are usually too short to allow a full den of boys to each have a line to say. The prayer must be sent to the Cubmaster one week in advance of the Pack meeting so that he can get it into the meeting flyer.
